Sore Throat Solutions

When you have a sore throat it is usually a side-effect of having a cold or flu. As an actor or performer you need to be able to tackle colds and their symptoms quickly and effectively. Sometimes you may have a performance at night and missing it is not an option. Here are two strategies to help you heal current and future sore throats. The ingredients listed make a great natural sore throat remedy. Make sure you are also getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of water and eating well throughout rehearsals and performance.

Ingredients of the Natural Throat remedy

Lemon

Ginger

Garlic

Apple Cider Vinegar

Honey

Method

This natural sore throat remedy is a great drink with lots of natural goodies to help heel sore throats and colds. You can either have it as a tea or as a cold beverage. To make the latter, simmer the lemon, ginger and garlic in water (more water = less concentrated) for 10-12 mins then strain it into a bottle (glass not plastic) and add the apple cider vinegar and sweeten to taste with honey. If you make a large batch it will last about 3 days. There are differing views on whether to cook the lemon or add fresh lemon at the end, I have always cooked it, but either is fine.

Other Options

Steaming

Steam is a great way of  hydrating the vocal chords. You can buy proper steamers at some pharmacies and they are great. Alternatively you can boil water in a mug with paper wrapped around it to make a tube or have a shower and breath in the warm air.

Lozenges and Lollies

These can also offer some relief and help the symptoms of sore throats. However, some products have the adverse affect of drying out the throat so consult your pharmacist or doctor before taking any. If your sore throat is related to over use the best solution is
vocal rest.

Vocal Rest.

That doesn’t mean whispering, which can in fact make the problem worse by drying out the vocal chords, but stopping speaking all together! Try to avoid parties or situations where you have to compete with loud background noise. Doing a daily vocal warm up can also be useful in insuring less vocal problems.

To recover the voice avoid:

– Talking over background noise.
– Excessive talking and shouting.
– Talking when tired.
– Talking with a dry voice.
– Drinking excessive alcohol.
– Smoking.
– Clearing your throat and coughing.
