Hey! Thank you so much and either option is valid. Many people in the industry love self-tapes and almost prefer them, but always great to have proper footage as well. Ideally I encourage actors to have great self-tape footage AND great showreel style footage.

Definitely no rule about moving your arms too much. Functional gesturing is encouraged. One of my favourite actors is Jim Carey. Now that man moves his arms a lot and don’t think he’s done too badly.

All of these monologues are StageMilk originals unless an author is stated. So the majority have no further context, so I would feel free to get your students to great the given circumstances.

Comment on Female Shakespeare Monologues by Andrew Hearle https://www.stagemilk.com/female-shakespeare-monologues/#comment-6293 Fri, 02 Feb 2024 23:04:49 +0000 http://www.stagemilk.com/?p=643#comment-6293 Great question! I would argue all of Shakespeare’s monologues are emotionally charged and perfect for what you are after. That said, Lady Macbeth stands out, as does Hermione or any of the pieces from Winter’s Tale. A more nuanced one could be Portia from Julius Caesar.

Hey! First thing I would say is Shakespeare is really easy to re-cast and play with. I have seen classic roles played by all ages and genders. So I would never feel limited just to the set reality of the play. I was in a play with “Prospera” a female Prospero – this role would be perfect for 55+ – Tamora in Titus is also good. King Lear or Queen Lear (famously done by Robyn Nevin) is a classic older character (probably over 55) but could be fantastic to work on. Nurse in R + J – and this list goes on!
